Meditation for Beginners

Well I can assure you - I am no pro at it, but meditation is something that comes with time. The biggest hurdle in meditation is 'self discipline', for if you cannot discipline yourself to meditate and to practise frequently - then there will be little benefit derived from the practise. The key to meditation is to set a time and place and then follow through with it. Make sure to rid of any distractions like a computer or phone, and try to have some solitude.

Before meditating it is good to sit calmly for a few moments and clear your mind. At the same time, for no more than a few minutes - bring your mind to focus on what you hope to gain through meditation; ie. a deeper sense of self, well-being, peace, etc. and then sit in the meditation "posture".
The correct way to sit in zen meditation is cross-legged with both knees touching the floor. This is achieved through raising your bottom by sitting on a small pillow so that you are slightly elevated. It is sometimes called the mountain posture for this reason as your body should take a similar shape of a triangle.

Keep your back straight and your chin slightly tucked in. Some people find it helpful to imagine a string is pulling them from the top of their head, (this can help to ensure you are sitting up-right). Begin to focus on your breathing. Slowly breathe in and out through your nose. Concentrate on the in breath, the pause, and the outbreath. Be as aware as you can - do not force your breathing. If you wish, you can half close the eyelids, and look slightly downward at about 40degrees (this helps to slow mind activity).

That's it for now... I will be posting more informative and detailed blogs in the near future. I hope you can find some of it helpful!
